Dr Malcolm Riddoch : MusicTech Lecturer

Malcolm Riddoch BSc BA PhD has a background in earth sciences, archaeology and a doctorate in the phenomenological philosophy of Husserl and Heidegger. His musical curiousity started in the mid 80’s with a Profile Silhouette Strat, a soldering iron, hacksaw, preamp kit and a 1960 vintage Echolette valve tape loop machine.
One time noisist in Thou Gideon including their Poons Head studio album “Sounds for Stoners” he formed Enargeia in 1991 with fellow Gideon member Jeremy Hicks. Combining electroacoustics with Roland analogue synths and a penchant for live structured noise improvisation the duo have worked in collaboration with various audiovisual artists on the live performance circuit, experimenting online since 1995 including participation in the Time’s Up Transient Series, and producing a library of studio and live recordings. Performances include PICA “Katzenjammer” 1995, the Verge (now Kurb) 1997, “Gulag” at The Gulag 1999, Totally Huge New Musical Festival 2000, a 3 day live noise installation for the demise of the Broadway Squat Space (Sydney) 2001 and recently the Artrage Bakery “Demolition Sequence” 2007.
Malcolm has also produced audio for soundtracks, collaborative art installations, both gallery and online, as well as numerous commercial multimedia projects including the Western Australian Museum’s “Land and People” exhibit. He is also a founding partner of the online digital record label Hidden Shoal Recordings and has been teaching in electronic arts, music technology and design at ECU for the past 7 years.
