Christopher de Groot holds a bachelors degree in composition with honours from the West Australian Academy Of Performing Arts (WAAPA). He began his formal musical education in 2000 studying classical piano under the pianist/lecturer Janna Kover. In 2005, after graduating from his bachelor degree in composition, Christopher entered the honours program.

His honours thesis titled “Orchestral Engagements With Rock Music: a study of Michel Colombier’s Wings as a catalyst for Evolution – a rock symphony for jazz orchestra” analyses Colombier’s ground breaking 1971 Symphony Wings, whilst showing his influence on Christopher’s own ambitious work Evolution. Evolution was performed at WAAPA in October 2005 and was praised for its fusion of styles and its use of multi-media projection.

Christopher was a member of the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) Composer’s Ensemble from 2004 - 2006 and has written and conducted a number of full orchestral and big band works for the orchestra. As a member of WAYJO Christopher has shared the stage with such musicians and performers as: James Morrison, Graeme Lyall, Don Burrows, Daryl Somers, Ed Partyka, Joe Chindamo, Rhonda Burchmore, Grace Knight, and Libby Hammer.

In 2007 Christopher was asked by WAAPA composition lecturer Cat Hope to be Composer In Residence (CIR) for a semester. As CIR Christopher was given the opportunity to present a lecture on his honours research as well as compose various works for performance. He also scored two student films; one of which (Party For One) received awards for Best Picture, Best Experimental Film and Best Soundtrack Composer at the recent 2007 Perth International Film Festival.

Christopher is adept in many different musical styles ranging from new classical music to jazz, rock/pop and sound-scape/electronic.

Christopher is currently studying a Masters degree in screen composition at WAAPA and is a part-time staff member teaching certificate IV composition.
